How to rehabilitate from injury

With so many branches of Physiotherapy and so many professions marketing themselves as Physios, it can be difficult to know what you should look for when choosing a company to help treat your pain and injury.

In this blog, we’ll look at exactly what Sports Physiotherapy is, and what to look for and what to avoid when seeking help.

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy treatment helps people with injury (sports-related or otherwise), illness or disability to restore their movement and function. They should also help you to reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future.

The best tools for achieving this include:

  • Advice and education

The reason why you’re in pain can be complex. A good Physio will help you understand your pain whilst guiding you towards which treatments are most likely to get you back to full function as quickly and sustainably as possible.

  • Graded exposure

In order to improve your function, you need to stress your body. Your Physio will help you understand what types of movement you should practice and how much. Gradually exposing your body to the stress needed from mobility and strength exercises can help you to make a full recovery and minimise the risk of re-injury.

  • Load management

Your journey to full recovery can often be a balancing act between helping you move more but not progressing too quickly which may delay recovery. Your Physio will help you manage the physical load you place on your body to keep you on the path to full function both efficiently and sustainably.

Physiotherapy also takes a holistic approach looking at the sociological, psychological and biological factors that contribute towards your pain, function and health behaviours. For example, they may help you understand how your sleep, stress, nutrition and mindset influence your pain and recovery to full function.

What is Sports Physiotherapy?

Sports Physiotherapy is a branch of Physiotherapy which specialises in pain and injuries related to sportspeople. These injuries are different from everyday aches and pains as they are due to the high levels of stress placed on the bodies muscles, bones and joints during high levels of performance.

Sports Physiotherapists usually work with strength coaches within a rehab and performance centre to complete the journey from rehabilitation to high-performance training.

What Sports Physiotherapy isn’t

The holistic approach used in sports injury and Physiotherapy should not be confused with alternative medicine which often delays recovery and needlessly cost you lots of money.

Alternative medicine that works is called conventional medicine. Although conventional medicine is not perfect it is based on Science which is self-correcting and improving all the time.

Some people swear by pseudo-scientific treatments such as manipulations, acupuncture and cupping because they may help you feel better for a few hours but the effects very rarely last.

These services often marketed using scientific language to sell the idea that they have scientific legitimacy when they have none as demonstrated by this study.

Instead of working due to the theories marketed, these treatments often capitalise on the regression to the mean and the placebo effect to give the illusion that a specific treatment effect is helping you.
